The Essentials
What’s in your gear bag?
Avalanche shovel, probe, saw, water, survival essentials, nutrition, camera equipment, map.
2008/2009 Recap and best memory?
Many deep, dark powder days with bitter cold temperatures. Lots of epic runs with friends in the best conditions on earth.
2009/2010 Outlook and goals?
Continue to explore different places and techniques. I just want to keep plugging away, for I have a long way to travel.
What is your ski style – how would you describe yourself?
I enjoy all types of skiing, I really do. But nothing comes close to the feeling of skiing untracked powder in the backcountry. The Deeper/further/higher I go, the happier I am.
Your ideal day on the mountain is…
An early start is really rewarding. Getting after it ALL day and coming home feeling completely worked. Anytime you can utilize a beautiful day to the fullest, feels good.
Where do you find clarity and inspiration?
The Mountains. I go there because everything is so clear. You don’t have to think about all of the problems in the world. You can just concentrate on simple things.
What was the moment of the biggest breakthrough in your skiing progression?
7 years ago, I broke my leg pretty bad while skiing in the park. The next winter I had to take it pretty easy. That’s when I discovered how much fun and adventure lies within riding natural mountains.
Before you got all your gear and lift tickets for free, how were you able to fund your skiing?
I’ve been fortunate enough to have either one of my parents working at a ski resort while growing up. We always had a pass. Big thanks to them!
How did you get your first sponsor?
Right place at the right time I guess.
What do you want your legacy in the ski industry to be?
Hopefully my legacy lies within the mountains and not in the “industry”.
What drew you to be part of the Armada family?
It was mad fresh at the time. And big thanks to Tanner because he basically set the whole thing up.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Was skiing always the plan?
I always knew that I was going to be skiing for the rest of my life from a young age. It was a natural progression into a complete lifestyle.
Where are you in 10 years?
I could be anywhere. It’s impossible to tell.
Your influences?
Family, music, ALL aspects of life.
Who was your local hero growing up?
No one in particular.
When and where was your first skiing picture published? What trick? Did you stick it?
It was a picture of me mobbing through the trees for the cover of a local coupon magazine. First and only, really.
Where was your first video appearance and with what music?
Year 2000, volume video mag, issue 2. Punk?
How important is music for you in a skiing video?
It’s fairly important. It makes a big difference when the soundtrack has a similar style to the visuals. It’s easier to watch.
What’s your favorite music track for a video part, if you could choose any?
It always depends on the style of your piece. What ever fits at the moment.
What’s your favorite Ski Movie ever and why?
I can’t really say I have a favorite. The last ski movie I watched was “The Fine Line”, a film about avalanches. I liked the freshness of that one.
Favorite video part ever and why?
I have no idea. Why? Because I’m indecisive.
The Random
Best après ski spot?
Hot springs.
Your ride?
Turbo diesel.
Pets?
2 Mastiffs.
Tell us about a day in the life.
It all depends on the season. Simply put, it usually involves an entire day in the mountains.
What’s in your fridge?
Lots of raw, organic vegetables and fruits. I switched my diet a few months ago in an attempt to revitalize my health.
Any overseas horror stories?
None. They’re all pretty positive.
What’s on your DVR?
I don’t think I have a DVR.
Something you are terrible at.
Surfing.
